With the Euros 2020 recently gracing us with it's presence a year on in 2021 and more recently the Olympics also on our screens. They've been a welcome distraction from the usual news we've become accustomed to seeing since the pandemic and the lockdowns began in March 2020! But what can we learn from the wonderful world of sports, winning major competitions, medals and the mindset it takes to do so!
Connect wanted to revisit the link they've drawn on many a times - that between sports, a winning mindset and sales.

This comparison is not to say that those don't enjoy sports cannot succeed in sales, on the contrary. It is true that there has always been a perception that those with a sporting background typically succeed when applying themselves to a career in sales or in business.
It is simply down the mindset.
If we look at running a business for example, it takes discipline, determination, perseverance and hard work.
Similarly to have a successful career in sales, these traits have to become second nature.

At Connect, we believe that it is true when an individual has previously applied themselves in a sport such as golf, swimming, equestrian, in order to excel, grow and improve and therefore enjoy the sport you have had to experience hardship, taking accountability, shown determination.
What is more, in team sports, you've had experience of having a team mates back, supporting team mates when it comes to achieving a goal and working collaboratively in order to get results.
Our Managing Director Matthew Stewart is an entrepreneurial spirit with a well recognised career in sales and in business. Matt Stewart also firmly believes his passion for sports and in succeeding as well as his competitive nature in golf, cricket, football, go hand in hand with the attributes that have deemed him a success in the business industry
Matthew describes his thought process when interviewing candidates when the topic of sports has arisen,
"If I'm honest not only is it a great conversation starter and allows you to really get an idea of who the candidate is as a person, it really is a green light when it comes to assessing the attributes of an individual and gives you a real insight into how this candidate would deal with rejection, challenging situations and hardships.
Sports-minded individuals are like a duck to water when it comes to training themselves to begin each day with a winning mindset. It's great when you work with a team that strive to beat their performance on the day before and success doesn't come without it's hardships!"
Sales always has been and always will be competitive - it's a great industry to learn how to become resilient, deal with people and overcome difficult situations.

Here at Connect we love to train our sales professionals in all aspects of sales but we do also offer training on mindset and a lot of personal development. So whether you are clean slate looking to brush up on your perseverance or you're an astute sports minded individual ready to rock, a sports mindset has a lot to bring to the Sales/Business table!
